Need a Cholesterol Pill? 3 Must-Know Facts

Have you ever wondered why you are given a cholesterol pill? Or rather, why are you getting a particular type of cholesterol pill? Here are some common facts about cholesterol pills.

Fact 1: There is more than 1 type of cholesterol pill

There are 5 mainly classes of cholesterol pills, namely (1) statin, (2) fibrates, (3) niacin, (4) bile acid sequestrates, (5) ezetimibe. Just like any other class of medication, these 5 act on distinct pathways in our body system. A doctor will evaluate your condition before deciding which class is suitable for you.

Fact 2: Your diet still matters even with cholesterol pills

Despite taking cholesterol pills, you will still need to control your diet. Dietary modifications work hand-in-hand with the pills to bring down ‘bad’ cholesterol.

Fact 3: Many people take their cholesterol pills wrongly

It is important to take cholesterol pills as prescribed to ensure the medication works effectively on you. For example, statin should be taken right before bedtime, as it blocks cholesterol production which usually happens at night when we are asleep.

Knowing these facts is crucial before you commence on any cholesterol-lowering agent. Seek advice from your pharmacist if you’re unsure of what your treatment entails.
